Texas, Missouri, and Virginia. The southern food cities are usually the ones that come to people’s minds when speaking of barbecue. But would you have thought of New York as one of those places? In fact, New York has become one of the giants in the modern barbecue scene.

Among all the great barbecue restaurants in New York comes Pig Beach, an award-winning, “non-traditional” barbecue restaurant that emerged from a seasonal pop-up store to a proud chained restaurant.

After winning first and second place at the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest in Memphis in 2015, the owners of Pig Beach decided to open their first location in Brooklyn. Seeing the success since 2016, Pig Beach expanded its location to Astoria by the end of 2021, and now in Florida.

The owners of Pig Beach described the place as “a beer garden meets barbecue meets burger.” Having a massive space in the Astoria location, the owners designed the space to be a place for families to come and spend a day watching a game while sampling all the delicious foods.

Instead of sitting down to order, customers will be ordering their food from station to station. From cold sides, hot sides, sandwiches/burgers, to meats, each station has extensive options that guarantee the satisfaction of all.

While the sides are delicious, I suggest filling up your belly with meats. All the meats available here are smoked in-house with a 24-hour commitment. A few must-tries include the peach & honey glazed ribs and Greek-seasoned smoked lamb shoulder with NYC white sauce.

Pig Beach Astoria is the perfect spot to go with friends or family, especially on the day of a game like the World Cup or Super Bowl. And though it’s still cold outside, be sure to put this place on your list and return in summer when you can enjoy a beer while sitting in its garden with a wide screen. Last but not least, try the foods that contributed to making New York one of the top destinations for barbecue.
